5 Things to Know Before Installing a Generator in Your Sprinter Van

Installing a generator in a Sprinter van is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to your build. It’s also one that benefits enormously from proper planning. After helping hundreds of builders spec and install PowerTech generators, here are the five things we wish every builder knew before starting the installation process.

1. Mounting Location Matters More Than You Think

The most common mounting locations are under the van (between the frame rails), in the rear cargo area, or in a dedicated compartment. Each has trade-offs. Under-van mounting keeps your interior space free but requires weatherproofing and makes maintenance harder. Interior mounting is easier to access but takes up living space and requires careful exhaust routing. Your choice affects vibration transmission, noise levels, exhaust management, and serviceability. Think about where you’ll be when you need to check the oil or perform maintenance — and plan accordingly.

2. Fuel Line Integration Requires Professional Attention

If you’re running a diesel generator off your Sprinter’s fuel tank (which we recommend), the fuel line integration needs to be done right. This means a proper fuel pickup that prevents the generator from draining your driving fuel below a safe reserve, correct fuel line sizing for the generator’s consumption rate, and appropriate filtration. 3. Ventilation and Exhaust Are Safety-Critical

This cannot be overstated: generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide, and improper exhaust routing can be fatal. Every generator installation needs a dedicated exhaust system that routes fumes completely outside the vehicle with no possibility of re-entry through windows, vents, or gaps in the floor. Additionally, the generator needs adequate air intake for combustion and cooling. PowerTech generators are designed with specific airflow requirements — follow them exactly. Install a CO detector in your van regardless. This is non-negotiable.

4. Vibration Isolation Saves Your Sanity

Even the quietest generator produces vibration. Without proper isolation mounts, that vibration transmits through the van’s frame and turns your living space into a massage chair you never asked for. Quality rubber isolation mounts, flexible exhaust connections, and flexible fuel lines are essential. The difference between a properly isolated installation and a rigid mount is the difference between barely noticing the generator is running and being unable to sleep.

5. Plan Your Electrical Integration Early

Your generator doesn’t exist in isolation — it’s part of a complete electrical system that includes batteries, an inverter/charger, solar (if equipped), shore power, and your DC distribution. The generator’s output needs to integrate cleanly with your inverter/charger so it can charge your battery bank while simultaneously powering AC loads. Plan the wire runs, transfer switch or automatic changeover, and control wiring before you start building cabinets and walls. Retrofitting electrical runs through a finished van build is a nightmare.
